Nursing Home Knowledge Video Series

Steve hosted a five part series on Nursing Home Knowledge for First Coast Living. The purpose of the video series is to share what you need to know when you need to put a loved one in a nursing home. As part of this series, we put together a comprehensive nursing home guide that covers this information.

Blind Tears and Solitary Whispers: A Tough Guy’s Journey Into the Light

Steve recently was asked to write an article for the Warrior, the magazine for Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyer’s College, about the challenges of getting a tough country guy to open up about how an injury had dramatically affected his family life.  It was a honor for Steve to be chosen to write an article for such a prestigious publication.  We hope you enjoy it.

Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyer’s College, Graduate Course 1

Steve recently returned from attending the eight day Graduate Course I at Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyer’s College at Thunderhead Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming. The Trial Lawyer’s College was founded in 1994 by legendary trial lawyer Gerry Spence whose vision was to train everyday lawyers to represent regular people who need an effective voice in the legal system. The course focused on teaching trial skills using the psychodramatic method to discover the story of the case and witnesses.

Gerry Spence personally attended several sessions, one of which he demonstrated the TLC method of selecting a jury with mock jurors. Even at age 84, he was amazing as ever.

On Thursday night, the Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, spoke to the attendees about overcoming fear. He also spoke about the sacred duty we have as trial lawyers to fight for clients and to not fear failure.

It was not all work. The attendees got to hike Spence mountain each morning at 6:00 a.m. (four miles roundtrip at 7,000 feet) and share stories, songs and poems around the campfire at night.

It was a memorable week and Steve left recharged and returned home excited to continue the fight against big nursing home chains and insurance companies.

Home Instead Senior Care and Hilarity for Charity

Home Instead offers an individualized approach to keep seniors safe and sound at home, instead of having to transition to a long-term care facility. Home Instead Senior Care began from personal experience. Paul and Lori Hogan founded Home Instead, Inc. and began serving seniors in 1994. It was Paul Hogan’s own family experience caring for his grandmother that made him realize the need for non-medical care and elder companionship services to help seniors live independently at home. On April 5th, 2016, Jacksonville’s Home Instead Senior Care held its first annual Hilarity for Charity, an event which raises funds to support seniors and their families living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Our firm proudly supported this event, and we are blessed with a continual partnership with this organization as we seek to advocate and care for our local seniors.

Seniors on a Mission

In February 2016, our firm provided lunch for a group of seniors gathered at the workspace for a mission project sponsored by Seniors on a Mission.  Seniors on a Mission is an organization which exists to honor, love, and encourage senior adults, inspiring them to live invigorated lives filled with purpose and grace.  The organization began in 2005, and has since engaged over 800 seniors while donating over 88,000 community service hours.  These seniors find meaningful work, purpose, and friendships, while lending their helping hands, engaged minds, and seasoned skill sets to area charities and ministries.  We are honored to support this organization that advocates for Jacksonville’s seniors. The FJA’s First Annual Lobby Day

The Florida Justice Association Board Members and Leadership recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for their First Annual Lobby Day. As a Board Member, Steve spent the day meeting with several Florida Congressmen to discuss issues related to the safety of Florida’s families including the Arbitration Fairness Act, Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act, and repeal of rental car liability immunity. We want to thank our members of Congress for taking time out of their busy schedules to meet with us. It was a productive day.

Volunteer Day at Nourishment Network

On Saturday, June 7, 2014, our firm was able to help support Nourishment Network by volunteering in their food warehouse. The warehouse is where volunteers sort, bag and stock food for local distribution agencies.  On this particular day, our firm was given the task of making emergency food bags. It’s a simple job that comes with huge rewards as we know we are helping our community in a big way.

Nationally, 1 in 4 children don’t know where their next meal will come and 1 in 6 adults experience food insecurity each day. Did you know one dollar donated to Nourishment Network generates seven meals, or 2 days of food for one person in need?  These staggering facts are just a few of the many reasons our firm loves to support Nourishment Network, North Florida’s food bank.

If you are interested in lending a hand to this great organization, please contact our firm or visit the Nourishment Network website. They could always use an extra pair of helping hands.
